Retainers Following Orthodontic Treatment

Dr. Trista Felty
Orthodontist, Abbotsford BC

Recent studies now show clear benefits to using retainers following orthodontic treatment. And although teeth will not necessarily revert to where they were pre-ortho, throughout their lifetime, everyone’s teeth will move to some degree.

In this edition of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, invites Dr. Trista Felty, an orthodontist from Abbotsford BC, to discuss the key considerations when it comes to choosing and using lifelong retainers.

Dr. Felty outlines the advantages and disadvantages of different styles of retainers, including the Hawley, the Essix, and Bonded retainers. She also discusses hygiene, follow-up, and the all-important relationship between GP, orthodontist and patient.

“Everyone’s teeth will continue to move throughout their lifetime. Whether you’re young or old we still recommend you use a retainer.”
