Emotional Intelligence as a Clinical Leadership Skill

Emotional intelligence EI. Head silhouette with gear wheels.

Practising dentistry requires more than clinical expertise. Dentists must also navigate complex interpersonal relationships, manage stressful situations, and create an environment where patients and dental team members feel supported and understood. Emotional intelligence plays an important role in meeting these challenges and is increasingly recognized as an essential clinical leadership skill.

In this second instalment of her series on the science of leadership for dentists, Dr. Kristin Yont, a general dentist from Calgary and a Benson-Henry Institute SMART-Certified health-care provider, returns to CDA Oasis to explore the role of emotional intelligence in dental practice. Dr. Yont discusses how greater emotional awareness can help dentists communicate more effectively, build trust with patients and team members, and become more effective leaders.
