Congratulations to Order of Canada Recipients Dr. Gilles Lavigne and Dr. Jack Gerrow

During a July 4 ceremony held at La Citadelle in Quebec City, Dr. Jack Gerrow and Dr. Gilles Lavigne received the Order of Canada from Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada.

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Recipients who bear the Order’s iconic snowflake insignia have changed our nation’s measure of success and, through the sum of their accomplishments, have helped us build a better Canada.

It is with great pride that the Canadian Dental Association congratulates Dr. Gerrow and Dr. Lavigne for their contributions. We thank them for their contributions to the dental profession, standards and, research.

About Dr. Jack Gerrow

Dr. Gerrow is an innovator in developing competency standards for dentists. Professor emeritus at Dalhousie University and former long-serving registrar of the National Dental Examining Board, he pioneered a new approach to competency testing in dental education. Today, this model is used globally in dentistry and other professions to simultaneously ensure that rigorous safety standards in oral health care are met, while affording greater flexibility and job opportunities for foreign-trained dentists.

About Dr. Gilles Lavigne

Dr. Lavigne’s ground-breaking research has transformed dental practices. A neuroscientist, dentist, and professor at l’Université de Montréal, he uncovered the interactions between pain and sleep disorders, a reality affecting more than one in four Canadians. After determining the underlying causes of bruxism and snoring, Dr. Lavigne proposed new treatments, positioning him as a leading authority in this field both in Canada and around the world.
