What are the Legal Implications of Cannabis in the Dental Practice?

Mr Lonny Rosen, certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Health Law, spoke with me about the legal implications that the legalization of cannabis poses for Canadian dental practices. Besides the zero-tolerance behaviour implied for all health care providers, there are some considerations that dentists should look into when treating or communicating with their patients.

Mr. Rosen advises individual, corporate and institutional clients with respect to health care legislation and policies, and represents clients in a wide range of civil and administrative proceedings. We are thankful that he is willing to share his expertise with our audience.

We also would like to hear from you and know your thoughts and questions about this topic. If you wish to reach us, it’s quite easy: email us at oasisdiscussions@cda-adc.ca or call our toll-free number 1-855-716-2747.

Until next time!

Any recommendations for Canadian dentists who want to consume cannibis recreationally off-hours? Is there a half-life or waiting period where we would not be considered impaired?
    I’m asking for a friend!

The first drug interaction Mr Rosen mentioned was lidocaine as an example.
Please clarify as a lit search of drug interactions shows very little published data to date???
Can we have some clarification of his statement. (source/reference of information)

It’s obvious that the Liberal Government, in their haste to legalize Cannabis in Canada, have done so with no regard for its impact and concerns in dentistry. We as dentists are now in no way prepared to deal with patients using cannabis, medically and legally. I foresee serious problems arising as the future unfolds.
