Massive Open Online Course in Implant Dentistry

Dr. Mattheos Nikos, Clinical Associate Professor in the faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong, is part of a team who put together a MOOC: Massive Open Online Course in implant dentistry. He met with Dr. John O’Keefe to share this new way of learning and teaching.

Implant Dentistry MOOC @ HKU

Highlights

This free “massive open online course” is a new development in e-learning and focuses on implant dentistry.

The majority of the educators involved in this project are external to HKU and for a global team of 20. This initiative is funded by HKU and academics are supported by a team dedicated to MOOC development and implementation. Projects of this nature help to increase brand awareness of the academic institution and can have several benefits in the long-term, especially if they are well-executed.

This particular MOOC will discuss the principles, benefits and limitations of implant dentistry. Many dentists graduate without having proper training in implant dentistry given the time constraints of dental school curricula. The MOOC will help dentists gain a perspective on the complexity of implant dentistry and how to integrate implants into a general practice environment.

The course is self-paced with 5 individual modules. Enrolment in the course will end on November 13, 2016; however it will be offered again in 2017.
