Preventing HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Cancer: How Effective are the Vaccines?

In this video, Dr. Anna Giuliano, Professor and Director of the Center for Infection Research in Cancer, spoke with Chiraz Guessaier, CDA Oasis Manager, about her contribution at the International Consultation Meeting which took place in July 2015.

Dr. Giuliano identified that despite the success of HPV vaccines in preventing a number of cancers, evidence of their effectiveness in preventing oropharyngeal cancer is still inexistent.

Dr. Anna Giuliano

In addition to her role as a Senior Member in Cancer Epidemiology, Dr. Giuliano is the Founding Director for the Center for Infection Research in Cancer (CIRC) at Moffitt. Her career had its inception in the relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and cervical cancer in females, and has since evolved to encompass HPV and penile, anal and oropharyngeal cancers in males, as well as other infectious diseases and their causal relationships with various cancers. Dr. Giuliano’s work has contributed significantly to our understanding of the rate at which HPV infections are acquired and cleared, the proportion that progress to disease, and HPV vaccine protection against multiple diseases in females and males.
