This is a very good review of the conditions that can occur in the head and neck.Unfortunately only a very few dentists actually perform a head and neck examination .The current focus on oral cancer is myopic as the vast majority of life threatening diseases occur in the head and neck.
Since 1980 I have discovered 142 cases of life threatening disease performing a full head and neck examination .The vast majority of these were discovered in the neck-only 25 were precancerous or overt cancer.
Unfortunately,in the rush to provide the patient with a beautiful smile a significant problem is missed.
As I point out to dentists and students :What are they trying to do, make the patient look good for their coffin?
I encourage everyone to take the time to perform a thorough head and neck examination. Your patients will respect you, together with the physicians!
This will help to bring back some level of trust and overall respect for our Profession which has been severely eroded over the years.
