Throughout the month of September and in early October, AboutFace hosts “Camp Trailblazers” across Canada, a camping retreat for youth ages 10 to 18.
Between September 14 and 17, I volunteered with Camp Trailblazers Ontario in Haliburton. The 4-day camping adventure involved a number of fun outdoor activities, such as rock-climbing, zip-lining, and high-ropes. The campers had a fantastic time overcoming physical boundaries, catching up with friends, and sharing personal thoughts and feelings. This program is very special in that the campers get to spend an entire weekend in an environment where they are accepted for who they are and where everyone understands each other.
Camp Trailblazers also runs in British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. In addition to Camp Trailblazers, AboutFace runs other programs and services throughout the year. I would highly recommend dentists and dental students get involved and volunteer with this amazing cause; it truly is a life-changing experience!
AboutFace is always looking for volunteers!
