In this edition of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, invites Dr. Michael Glogauer, Dentist in Chief at the University Health Network, to present his study Periodontal Inflammation Primes the Systemic Innate Immune Response, which was recently published in the Journal of Dental Research.
The study attempts to understand the possible mechanism whereby oral inflammation or periodontal disease can have an impact on systemic health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, something for which there has long since been a consensus among the dental profession.
Dr. Glogauer walks through both the animal and human models used in the study and concludes that periodontal disease does in fact have a significant impact on the innate immune response. He even suggests that the findings may in part explain the cytokine storm witnessed in a sub group of patients who respond poorly to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
“I believe this data is significant enough for dentists to help their patients understand that oral health optimization, including the elimination of all oral infections, is critically important to overall wellbeing.”

Hello great insight here. I am asking for a precise “list” of what constitutes the “Innate” immune system, where it crosses over to the adaptive system, and are there elements of both that are in a “grey” zone, that is , understood to be a component of both.
Thank you
