Gender-based Violence and Oral Health Care

Gender-based violence can have a significant impact on oral health, including direct physical trauma, poor hygiene, neglect, and avoidance of dental care. Furthermore, dentists and dental teams are often among the first health professionals to see signs of violence, as injuries to the head, face and mouth are common.

In this CDA Oasis discussion, Dr. Sanjukta Mohanta, a general dentist from Toronto, explains what gender-based violence can look like in a dental setting and outlines the dentist’s role in recognizing signs and offering trauma-informed care.
