University of Manitoba to Develop Point of Care Strip Test to Detect Periodontal Gum Disease

Periodontal disease affects seven in ten Canadians over the age of forty-five, often leading to tooth loss and other oral and systemic health complications. Yet, despite being such a common condition, it can be difficult to diagnose using current tools.

In this video, Dr. Denice Bay, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Manitoba, discusses her current research project to develop a rapid point of care strip test to detect periodontal gum disease bacterial by-products in saliva.

The project has recently received funding from Research Manitoba and will run for two years in partnership with Periodiagnostics Inc. Dr. Bay will lead this project with post-doctoral fellow Dr. Carmine Slispki and a team at Periodiagnostics Inc., which include Peter Taylor, Harry Ethans and Rick Reiss.

“If we can catch this early in adults it would lead to significant advancements in terms of preventative disease management.”
