Trauma-informed Care in the Dental Office

For patients who have experienced significant trauma in their lives, a visit to the dental office can be a very challenging experience. The practice of trauma-informed care recognizes and responds to the signs and symptoms of trauma to better support the health care needs of that patient.

In this video, Dr. Ruth Lanius, Professor of Psychiatry and director of clinical research in post-traumatic stress disorder at Western University, shares her insight into trauma-informed care. Dr. Lanius, who also serves as a scientist at Lawson Health Research Institute, also offers practical advice on recognizing and managing patients who have experienced trauma.

“This is all about collaboration and giving the person control, because during the trauma the person never had control.”
