Transforming Dentistry: The Rise and Near Demise of Dentistry at Western University

A new book documenting the rich history of Western University’s Dental Faculty has been published by University of Toronto Press. Transforming Dentistry: The Rise and Near Demise of Dentistry at Western University traces the transformation of Western’s Faculty of Dentistry, highlighting how global economic events and national political decisions affected the founding and growth of the program.

In this video, co-author Dr. David Kenny, reflects on his time at Western University, discusses his motivation for undertaking such an extensive project, and outlines some of the key events in the 1990s that threatened the future of dental education at Western.

“By the beginning of the 1990s, the University presidents were in a situation where they were going to have to start cutting programs. Many programs were under threat and dentistry was targeted.”
