Getting Involved in Oral Sleep Appliance Therapy

Dr. JOHN VIVIANO

In this latest in a series of discussions on Oral Appliance Therapy, Dr. John O’Keefe invites Dr. John Viviano, a general practitioner from Mississauga who dedicates much of his practice to dental sleep medicine, to walk through the steps required to get started in the management of patients with sleep apnea.

Here are the key takeaways from the conversation:

  • There is a growing awareness of the importance of quality restorative sleep and how it relates to optimal performance.
  • It is important to get proper training before getting involved in the management of sleep apnea. Programs are available both in Canada and the US for those interested in acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Dr. Viviano’s practice and teaching is based on the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine guidance.
  • Creating an awareness/screening program among your existing patient population is a good way of getting started and developing relationships with local sleep physicians.

“When I realized how much of an impact I could have on my patients, it changed my life and the course of my career” – Dr. John Viviano
