With rapid advancements in dental restorative materials over recent decades, it can be hard to keep abreast of the current trends. In this latest episode of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. John O’Keefe invites Dr. Rick Carvalho, Professor of Dental Biomaterials, to unpack the advantages and disadvantages of Highly Translucent Zirconia, a material that is growing in popularity due to its aesthetically favourable qualities.
In a concise 12-minute presentation, Dr. Carvalho offers his valuable insight into the nature of HT zirconia as a dental material. He assesses its characteristics, and highlights its limitations and advantages as compared with traditional zirconia and lithium disilicate.

Thank you for the great information on Zirconia crowns. It was good to learn about how there is a compromise to get better aesthetics. My personal favourite is Emax crowns. If I’m going to use Zirconia, I’ll probably stick to the more opaque version after hearing Dr. Carvalho’s information.
