What You Should Know About COVID-19 Vaccines

The search for a viable vaccine to combat the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is a subject that has dominated global headlines for much of 2020. Finally, the results from the clinical trials of two leading vaccine candidates   have confirmed an effectiveness of upwards of 94%, sparking much-needed optimism that a solution to the COVID-19 pandemic is at hand.

“Just because people are getting vaccinated does not mean they do not need to social distance. Until there is sufficient data, people should follow public guidelines.”

Chiraz Guessaier, Manager of CDA Oasis, talks to pharmacology expert Dr. Mark Donaldson, Associate Principal at Vizient, about the implications and the complications of deploying the much-awaited COVID-19 vaccines. Dr. Donaldson outlines the mechanism of action of each candidate, and compares the logistical challenges of the two front runners from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech. He also considers the durability of the potential vaccines, and cautions against the early lifting of restrictions.
