Enhancing Upper Body Flexibility

Every dental professional knows the feeling of a stiff neck and shoulders after a long day on their feet at the clinic. But what are the long-term consequences of poor posture on the job, and what should we be doing to offset them?

In this edition of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. Uche Odiatu, General Dentist from Toronto and expert in fitness and wellness, explains how years of poor posture while practicing dentistry can result in what he calls a “Contracted C” shape, that may lead to reduced function and even end a career before its time.

Highlighting the benefits of prevention over cure, Dr. Odiatu demonstrates some simple postural exercises that can be performed within the busy day at the dental office. By focusing on opening the chest and strengthening the upper back muscles, he suggests that as little as three minutes, twice a day can provide the flexibility necessary to restore correct posture.

“Treat your body as a friend,” says Dr. Odiatu. “Treat it with reverence and it will perform for you for many decades.”
