Enhancing Specialists-GP Relationships

The benefits of interdisciplinary care in dentistry first became apparent to Dr. Sam Hickman during his time at the Mayo Clinic, where he was clearly impressed by how the specialist dental care center operated as a collaborative model.

Now, having recently purchased his own practice in Ottawa, Dr. Hickman is well on his way to fulfilling his dream of creating an interdisciplinary specialist clinic here in Canada, with a clear focus on holistic patient care.

“I urge people to work collaboratively whenever possible to improve the overall quality of care for patients,” says Dr. Hickman. “Everybody learns along the way.”

In this edition on CDA Oasis Live, Dr. Hickman talks to Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, about his philosophy of interdisciplinary care. He reflects on the changing relationship between the General Practitioner and Specialist, and highlights the benefits of taking a more collaborative approach.
