Supporting Your Practice

NLS 2020 – 3D Printing Research at the Georgia Dental College

In the second installment from the Northern Lights Symposium 2020, Dr. Fred Rueggeberg, Professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences at the Dental College of Georgia  at Augusta University, presents a study on the Effect of Print Angulation on Surface Roughness and Dimensional Reproducibility of 3D-Printed Models.

In order to optimize space on the build plate in 3D printing, angling the orientation of the printed object is a common practice. But given the auxiliary supports required, the question is how this angulation affects the accuracy and the surface smoothness of the model.

In this in-depth presentation, Dr. Rueggeberg presents his detailed results and analysis of a selection of printer-resin combinations, and offers practical conclusions for dentists considering an investment in 3D print technology. This study was originally scheduled to be a poster discussion at 2020 IADR in Washington DC. The work was initiated by Dr. Christian Brenes at the University of South Carolina.

On The Northern Lights Symposium

The Northern Lights Symposium (NLS) is an international dental gathering focussed on the sciences and research in dental materials. The symposium was founded by Dr. Richard Price, Professor in the Department of Dental Clinical Sciences at Dalhousie University.

Since 2012, experts in dental restorative materials from North and South America, Australasia, the Middle East, and  Europe have been convening at Dalhousie University, Halifax, to discuss advances in dental restorative materials and light curing technology.

This year, due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northern Lights Symposium successfully pivoted to a 3-day online format, featuring six diverse presentations on cutting-edge topics:

  • The Use of Pre-Heated Composites
  • 3D Printing Research
  • Blue Light Hazards in Dentistry
  • Restarting Dental Education During COVID
  • The 3 Second Power Cure System – A Clinical Trial
  • The Poor Cousin Revisited - A Plea to Raise the Bar in Dental Publication
