A key strategy for managing pain in children is prevention. Early childhood and severe early childhood caries are among the most common chronic childhood diseases in Canada. The treatment of dental disease in children accounts for a significant use of day surgical time. Because of this, children spend long periods of time on waitlists, and subsequently experience dental pain.
In this in-depth presentation, Dr. Tracy Doyle and Dr. Jennifer MacLellan, Staff Pediatric Dentists at IWK Health Centre and Associate Professors at Dalhousie University Faculty of Dentistry, offer their considerable insight into managing pain in pediatric patients.
Dr. Doyle and Dr. MacLellan walk through the effects of dental pain on children, the factors exacerbating children’s pain, and outline key strategies in pediatric assessment and pharmacological management.
