There is mounting evidence that Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) can be used for the arrest or reversal of noncavitated and cavitated dental caries as a non-restorative treatment.
SDF has commonly been used in children; however, with these two cases, Dr. Erin Watson shows that it can also be used in adult patients in general and in adult oncology patients in particular.
Dr. Erin Watson is a general dentist. She is also Deputy Chief of Dental Oncology and Fellowship Co-Director at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto.

Highlights
- It is important to reiterate that SDF doesn't only have applications in pediatric and geriatric patients. SDF can be applied in cancer patients and yield successful outcomes.
- SDF is indicated for cancer patients with extreme risk of caries, who cannot tolerate standard treatment for medical reasons, who have more lesions than can be treated in one visit and those lesions are difficult to treat, and who have limited access to dental care.

AMAZING video thank you Dr. Watson!
You mentioned that for patients that do require exos in areas at risk for ORNJ you use the PENTOCLO protocol – would you be willing to share with me the guidelines/protocol that you use in your clinic (so that I can share with my fellow hospital dentists in Manitoba)? thanks so much
Hi JP,
Thanks for the kind comment. To be clear – I don’t prescribe the regimen myself, it is prescribed by one of our radiation oncologists in our adult radiation late effects clinic or by our staff oral surgeon. I’m sure they would be happy to share their protocol with you as there is some variation. Typically a combination of pentoxifylline, Vit E, a steroid (often prednisone or dexamethasone) and clodronate. If you’d like to reach out to Chiraz she can provide you with my email and I can share more specific details.
