CDA-SK 2019 Convention: My patient uses cannabis. What’s the big deal?

Throughout the upcoming CDA Annual Convention, a variety of expert speakers will share their knowledge and expertise about emerging professional and clinical topics with attending dentists. This year conference speaker and frequent CDA Oasis contributor, Dr. Mark Donaldson is delivering a CDA Oasis session focusing on the legalisation of cannabinoids in Canada and their medicinal effects; and how these impacts dentists around the country.

About Dr. Mark Donaldson

Mark Donaldson, BSP, RPH, ACPR, PHARMD, FASHP, FACHE, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Montana in Missoula, Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Dentistry at the Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland, Oregon and Adjunct Professor, in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia.

He has a special interest in dental pharmacology and has lectured internationally to both dental and medical practitioners. He has spent the last 20 years focusing on dental pharmacology and dental therapeutics and is a leader in the field. Dr. Donaldson has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. He has practiced as a clinical pharmacy specialist, clinical coordinator and director of pharmacy services in several healthcare organizations in both Canada and the United States. 

Dr. Donaldson is also the 2019 recipient of the Special Friend of Canadian Dentistry Award conferred on an individual or organization outside of the dental profession in appreciation for exemplary support or service to Canadian dentistry and/or to the profession as a whole.

During this CDA Oasis conversation, Dr. Donaldson provides an overview of of his session at the convention:

  • How patients are using cannabinoids medicinally and recreationally.
  • What dentists can do to ensure patient safety and deliver high-quality dentistry to individuals who are using cannabinoids.
  • Understanding the nuance of bill C45 and cannabis legalisation in Canada and how it creates a legal pathway to access.
  • Managing people using cannabinoids from a dental perspective and asking patients about all types of medications they are taking.
  • Functions of cannabinoids and their impact on the central nervous system and how they interact with anti-anxiety agents typically delivered in the dental office.
  • Applying a non-judgemental approach to discussing cannabis with your patients.
  • How intake modalities can impact impairment levels and increased THC concentrations in modern cannabis products.
  • Increasing incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in young people and its contraindication to using nitrous oxide in seemingly healthy patients.
  • Resources for dentists unable to attend the convention.

This session will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 8:30-10:00 am in Gallery D.
