CARDP Meeting: From Implant Healing Abutment To Long Term Maintenance, Pitfalls To Avoid For Success: An Evidence Based Guide
Dr. Chandur Wadhwani, will be a speaker at the upcoming CARDP meeting, which will take place in Halifax in September 2016.
Highlights
Research has shown that peri-implant health in the long term is affected by the soft tissue (epithelium and connective tissue) seal which develops around implants and not the bone. The prevalence of peri-implantitis is unknown but data suggests that up to 50% of implants may have problems associated with them. Some believe that peri-implantitis could be as high as 50% in patients that had previous periodontal disease. Disease processes with implants may occur as a “cluster” effect at immediate placement (less common), 4 years, 7 years and 13 years post-placement.
Keys to Optimize the Long-term Success of Implants:
• Patient selection
• Surgical technique
• Use of new healing abutments (not reusing healing abutments used in previous sites)
• Probe implants to assess health of implants using 0.15N of force – bleeding or not
• Proper radiographic interpretation
