Today’s digital technology allows dentists to take digital impressions and electronically transfer them to a dental laboratory where the final restoration(s) are fabricated. Often, the restorations are fabricated using 3-D printed models or milled models. Christien Kopas explains the difference between these two models and the impact they can have on the final restoration and the fit in the patient’s mouth.
3D-Printed Models
- Layers of acrylic are deposited and light-cured to create a model
- Can be unstable and affected by light and heat
- Dies in printed models may become looser as the die is removed and replace in the model which can affect the final fit of the restoration in the patient’s mouth (e.g. loose contacts)
Milled Models
- Milled or created from a solid block of polyurethane material
- Unaffected by heat or ambient conditions
- Best for pressed or layered products
