Dr. Miriam Rosin, a leading cancer researcher at the BC Cancer Agency and at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC delivered a presentation on knowledge exchange at the recently held UBC Faculty of Dentistry Research Day. As part of that presentation, she connected live with Dr. John O’Keefe via video conference and asked him some questions about his views on the place of new media in knowledge exchange among dentists and other important stakeholders in the oral care sector.

The key points that Dr. O’Keefe made are:
- The CDA Knowledge Networks Department is working to create a virtual campfire where the stories most important to Canadian dentists and invited stakeholders will be told by the best storytellers in a climate of comfort where non-experts will not feel intimidated to engage in conversation with experts.
- What CDA is attempting to do with Oasis Discussions site, the CDA Oasis app and CDA Essentials magazine is replicate the strategy adopted by most modern news organizations – reach their community wherever they are engaging with information that is important to them.
- New media allow for interactive engagement in a profession-relevant conversation on a variety of platforms, reduce distance and time barriers and allow for measurement of success.
- A simple, low-cost, flexible desktop video conference platform called “Zoom” has been used at CDA for the past year to conceive and create content for use in the range of media channels operated by the CDA Knowledge Networks Department.
- There is an opportunity to create a virtual campfire for the Global Oral Cancer Forum, taking place in New York City, NY March 4-5. For more information about the Forum, click here.
