This work provides a systematic review of the literature from January 2003 to April 2014 pertaining to the incidence, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), and offers recommendations for its management based on multidisciplinary international consensus.

Purpose of the review

Key Findings

ONJ has been renamed BRONJ (bisphosphonate related), ARONJ (antiresorptive related) and more recently MRONJ1 (medication related); these terms are synonymous with ONJ, which is the preferred nomenclature recommended by the International Task Force.2

What about the use of ESWT Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy?

So far as I am aware, ESWT has not been used or at least reported on for osteonecrosis of the jaw. It has been researched for osteonecrosis of the femoral head with promising results:

The etiology of osteonecrosis of the femoral head is not directly comparable to osteonecrosis of the jaws. Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is avascular whereas osteonecrosis of the jaws has a bacterial component. Without clinical evidence for the use of ESWT for ONJ, its use on patients outside of a research setting would be ethically questionable and possibly actionable.
