Context
- Dental zirconia can no longer be considered unbondable to tooth tissue.
- Different mechanical and chemical surface pre-treatments have been recommended to improve the bonding of composite cement to zirconia.
- In today’s literature, multiple papers can be found reporting on bond strength measurements to zirconia; a large range of different pre-treatment methods has been tried out to ameliorate the bonding effectiveness to zirconia and its bond durability.
Purpose of the Review
- The systematic collection of bond strength data on luting materials/techniques to zirconia, and, based thereupon,
- The identification of the primary parameters that affect bond strength to zirconia, and
- Disclosure of general trends in bond durability for the different approaches today available to bond to zirconia ceramics.
Key Findings
- The combination of mechanical and chemical zirconia surface pre-treatments contributed to the durability of the bond of composite cements to zirconia ceramics.
- The cement choice appeared less critical, as long as a composite cement was used for adhesive luting of zirconia ceramics.
- When bonding effectiveness to zirconia was tested, a tensile test was more discriminative, particularly when combined with ‘water storage’ aging.
