Health Canada grants BC company, Prairie Naturals, licensing approval for probiotic chewing gum.  The company can now advertise the ability of its product to fight bad breath and improve oral health, especially useful if someone has been on antibiotic treatment that has depleted good germs. The toothbrush belonging to Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second person ever to set foot on the moon, sold at auction for the astronomical sum of $22,705. The toothbrush is one of only two taken to the lunar surface during the first moon landing on July 20, 1969. Read the article…

Public Health England has published “Water fluoridation: health monitoring report for England 2014”. The report found that 45% fewer children aged 1 to 4 in fluoridated areas are admitted to hospital for tooth decay than in non-fluoridated areas, and that there is no evidence of harm to health in fluoridated areas. The upcoming Annual World Dental Congress of the World Dental Federation (FDI) in New Delhi will see the participation of the highest political figure in India. A researcher at the Louisiana State University (LSU) receives a $50,000 grant to produce a potentially cancer-preventing gum that uses curcumin, a substance found in the spice turmeric. Gum may be an effective delivery system, as it allows for direct mucosal absorption of curcumin, bypassing the stomach, which has difficulty absorbing the substance. Learn more…

Four years ago, the federal government placed a ban on flavoured tobacco products, but they are still on shelves everywhere, and a recent study shows that more than half of high school tobacco users smoke flavoured products. That’s because rather than a complete ban, the law only targets products of a certain weight (1.4 grams or less) with a particular filter, both of which are easily changed to make the product legal again. Health Canada proposes changes to the familiar nutrition facts label found on thousands of grocery store items. Dental industry news

High-viscosity glass ionomers are not inferior to amalgam, according to a systematic review from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. No clinical evidence suggests they are less suitable when placing restorations in posterior load-bearing teeth and when sealing pits and fissures to prevent the development of tooth caries, the initiative found.
