IADR Scientific Facts (2013): Universal Adhesive Strength

This scientific fact is adapted from the 3M ESPE compilation of IADR 2013 scientific facts.

Objective

A new universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, 3M ESPE) was recently introduced to the market accompanied by claims it can
be used with the self-etch, selective etch or etch and rinse modes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dentin shear bond strengths of the new universal adhesive system used in each of the three modes.

Conclusions

The new universal adhesive had higher dentin bond strengths when used with the etch-and-rinse technique compared to the selective
etch and self-etch modes. The clinical relevancy of the slightly lower bond strengths in the self-etch and selective etch modes is not known.
