What are the effects of chlorhexidine in self-etching adhesive?

Purpose of the study
Compare the micro-tensile bond strengths (MTBS) and the FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) percent conversion of an all-in-one self-etching adhesives contained varying concentration of CHX.
- The addition of up to 1% CHX in AQ Bond Plus adhesive produced good MTBS and PC.
- Chlorhexidine treatment of dentin has been shown to reduce the collagenolytic activity of dentin. It seems that applying CHX during the bonding procedure is effective at reducing the degradation of hybrid layers over time. However, there is little information on the effects of adding CHX to all-in-one adhesives.
- Chlorhexidine contains two positive charges on its guanidinium groups. These groups would be electrostatistically attracted to the phosphate groups in apatite and phosphoproteins associated with collagen and to the two carboxyl groups of the 4-MET acidic monomer in AQP. This may have interfered with the etching ability of 4-MET in the AQP formulations with the highest CHX concentrations (i.e. 2 and 5%).
- More research is required to determine if CHX containing AQP (AQ Bond Plus) will increase the long-term durability of dentin adhesion by reducing the collagenolytic activity of the dentin.
