Is There An Association Between Periodontitis & The Severity of COVID-19 Infection?

Dr. Faleh Tamimi
Professor, College of Dental Medicine, Qatar University
Adjunct Professor, McGill University

We continue to explore the research studies underpinning the impact of COVID-19 on dentistry and oral health. I welcome Dr. Faleh Tamimi, Professor in the College of Dental Medicine at Qatar University, Adjunct Professor at McGill University, and the Canada Research Chair in Translational Craniofacial Research.

Dr. Tamimi coauthored a recent article, in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, on the association between periodontitis and the severity of COVID-19 infection, titled Association between periodontitis and severity of COVID-19 infection: A case–control study.

I sat down with Dr. Tamimi and asked him the following questions:

  • Why was it important to carry out the study and what was its purpose?
  • How did you conduct the study?
  • What are the study findings and what are their implications? Any future/follow-up studies?

We hope you find the conversation useful. We welcome your thoughts, questions and/or suggestions about this post and other topics. Leave a comment in the box below or send us your feedback by email.

Until next time!
