Dr. Alexander Mutchmor on Helping Dentists Access Federal Support Programs

Behind the day-to-day clinical duties of the dental practice, there is a small business affected like any other business in these unprecedented times. With the Federal Government introducing new programs to support small businesses every other day, it can be tough to navigate the growing number of relief options available to dentists.

Dr. Alexander Mutchmor, President CDA, talks to Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, about the roadmap CDA has developed for dentists and which they are passing on to the provincial dental associations, as well as how they are converting the CSI helpdesk into a resource for advice on federal programs, so that dentists can speak to someone directly about what they can apply for, and how they might go about it.

With additional advice on everything from how to deal with banks and landlords, to accessing wellness programs, Dr. Mutchmor assures dentists across Canada that they are not alone.

The help is out there if you need it.

I would like to know where to find the current forms to apply for staff supplemental funds over EI and also forms for my non-EI covered dentists (3).
    Thank you.

      Hello John,

This is Chiraz from CDA Oasis. We still do not have exact information on how to apply and where to find all the pertinent details. We will share them with your provincial dental association as soon as we have them.
      Take care and stay safe,
      Chiraz

As a dentist owner, if you are a salaried employee of your own corporation (and possibly other family members), can you claim the 75% wage subsidy for yourself and other salaried family members? The annual maximum is $58,700. This is a better route than applying for EI (although most self-employed tend to exempt themselves from EI), and CERB (which is a $2000/month maximum). There is also a $40,000 loan option of which $10,000 is forgiven if paid back by a certain date, which could provide another source of cash to support the business.

The forms to register for Supplementary Unemployment Benefits Plan can be found by going to Service Canada and then typing in Supplementary Unemployment Benefits Plan in the search box. You can top up EI benefits to 95% of regular salary. AFTER you register. There is a lot of material to read 1st before you jump into this program.

I am an associate dentist and Right now all the clinics that I was working with are closed .
I think lots of my colleagues have the same situation.l have no EI coverage wondering what would be the federal support for me.
In terms of tax payment the government considers the total income but why they don’t consider my tax bracket payment for financial support .

What is the CDA doing to get PPE to front-line COVID 19 compliant emergency dental clinics? Please reply with a tangible answer asap; my clinic is working flat-out with 2 dental teams screening thru teledentistry and booking pulpectomies or extractions based upon clinical diagnosis. Thankyou, Dr. Jerry Collins

My dentists friends in the USA with comparable income to mine are getting $8,000-$10,000 monthly from the CARES, PPP and other government programs. What do we get here!? It’s sad to say that we’re usually in the highest tax paying brackets helping everyone, and when it comes to difficult times like this and our incomes go to zero, we get very little help! We need advocacy and representation, we’re getting nothing.
