ODA New Dentist Symposium: Volunteerism, An Opportunity to Give Back with Dr. Jack Cottrell

The Ontario Dental Association is holding a New Dentist Symposium, October 21st and 22nd, 2017. This innovative Continuing Education event aims to bring together like-minded ODA members who are facing the same challenges and opportunities. The symposium was specifically crafted for new dentists who have been practicing dentistry for 10 years or less.

My second interview with speakers from the symposium is with Dr. jack Cottrell, general dentist from Port Hope, Ontario; long-time dentist volunteer, and Treasurer at the FDI, World Dental Federation. His sessions focuses on the benefits of volunteering and demystifies some of the aspects of getting involved in dental volunteer missions.

I hope you enjoy the interview and attend the symposium. Please share your thoughts and feedback with us through oasisdiscussions@cda-adc.ca

Dentists are highly trained professionals possessing very unique and coveted health-care skills. As leaders of the oral health-care teams in their communities, they understand the huge health burden of untreated oral disease in populations unable to access care. Their dilemma comes from knowing they have a moral and professional duty to assist the less fortunate; however, with busy lives some find it difficult to manage, and others express reluctance to help out due to fears of placing themselves, their families or their teams in a situation that is not within their comfort zone.

In this presentation, Dr. Cottrell will address the explosive growth of volunteer outreach programs worldwide, and demystify the selection process to allow individuals to critically assess and choose opportunities that best suit their needs. Dr. Cottrell will discuss what individuals can do to properly prepare for missions and discuss outcomes they may expect to achieve.
