The WHO defines a healthy workplace as one in which all members of the dental team collaborate to use a continuous improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of its members and the sustainability of the workplace. (Burton, 2010)
A workplace can be defined as a variety of settings: a dental office/practice, educational institutions, staff events, and continuing education and institutional settings.

Definitions of Harassment, Bullying, Abuse, Violence in the Workplace
Workplace harassment is defined as a single or repeated incident of objectionable or unwelcome behaviour that offends, humiliates, or degrades a particular person or group (e.g. someone is targeted on the basis of a characteristic such as age, sex, race, national of ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, etc.).
Workplace bullying is defined as repeated, unreasonable and unwelcome behavior that is directed towards a particular person or group. It has also been described as the assertion of power through aggression. Bullying actions can be both obvious and subtle (e.g. intimidating/threatening a person, belittling a person's opinions, spreading malicious rumours, excluding or socially isolating a person).
Workplace abuse/violence is defined as the threatened, attempted or actual conduct of a person that causes or is likely to cause physical or psychological injury or harm. It can include abusive behaviour (e.g. verbal or written threats, insults, threatening behaviour) or violent behaviour (e.g. physical attack or aggression, sexual violence, domestic violence).

Mission
Following the results of the CDAA and CDHA surveys on healthy and respectful workplaces, the CDA, CDHA and CDAA agreed to collaborate to promote a safe, healthy and respectful dental workplace. The Healthy Workplace Working Group will support CDA, CDHA and CDAA in collaborating on the development of education and information resources to ensure a healthy and respectful workplace that can be employed by the respective associations, as they deem appropriate.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Committee Composition
The Working Group shall consist of equal representation from CDHA, CDAA and CDA. Each association will appoint two members plus a staff support[1], if required.
Guiding Principles
The members of the working group value:
Meetings and Communication
A 1-hour meeting will occur once a month until the conclusion of the work of the Healthy Workplace Working Group. Email communication to share resources and feedback may be required between meetings as needed. The group will decide if additional meetings are required based on progress. Secretariat responsibilities will be shared by the three associations, with the hosting association being responsible for logistics, coordination of agenda and the production of meeting notes, specifying action items. Meetings will be held via video/teleconference. Some of the three associations may opt to be in person in the same room for the electronic meetings, as long as this does not incur budgetary expenditures to be shared by the three associations. Coordination of meetings will rotate between each association. The agenda for the meeting will be developed on a consensus basis by the Working Group representatives of the three associations.
Confidentiality
By joining the committee, each member agrees to maintain the confidentiality, security and integrity of all materials and information shared during and after their term on the committee.
[1] The staff support will not provide feedback and is not a voting member.
