Managing acute orofacial pain is an everyday responsibility in dental practice, but prescribing decisions require careful consideration of effective pain relief, patient safety, and the potential for medication misuse or diversion.
In this CDA Oasis Podcast, Dr. Daniel Haas, an internationally renowned expert in dental anaesthesia and professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, discusses the Canadian Dental Association’s recently published position statement on Appropriate Prescribing in the Management of Acute Orofacial Pain. Dr. Hass outlines the principles behind the statement, including addressing the source of pain whenever possible, prioritizing non-opioid therapies, assessing individual patient risk, and using opioids only when clinically necessary.
