Over the past few years, semaglutide medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus have transformed the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Their rapid adoption has reshaped treatment, sparked widespread public interest, and introduced new considerations for healthcare providers—including dentists.
In this CDA Oasis discussion, Dr. Aviv Ouanounou, a dental pharmacologist and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, discusses his recent article Oral Health Considerations and Dental Management Guidelines for Semaglutide Medications, which was recently published in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes. Dr. Ouanounou outlines what we know so far about the impact of GLP-1 medications on oral health and offers guidance on how best to manage dental patients undergoing this therapy.
Dr. Ouanounou would like to thank his co-author, Ms. Karina Kofman, for her contribution to the study.
