Ankyloglossia, also known as tongue-tie, is a variation of a normal oral structure and is defined as a restrictive lingual frenulum that may interfere with breastfeeding and increase maternal nipple pain by restricting the extension and elevation of the tongue to grasp the nipple while suckling.
In this CDA Oasis discussion, Dr. Duy Dat Vu, president of the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (CAPD), discusses the CAPD position statement on ankyloglossia and breastfeeding, published in March 2025, and offers advice to dentists on how to manage these cases in their office.
