What Role Can Dentists Play in the Fight Against Head and Neck Cancer?

The incidence of head and neck cancer has been increasing both globally and across Canada in recent years, with projections suggesting a continued rise. The increase is largely attributed to rising rates of oropharyngeal cancer, which are closely linked to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

In this CDA Oasis discussion, Dr. Cheryl Cable, who is the lead of the Alberta Head and Neck Cancer Leadership Team and also leads oral and maxillofacial care and research for Covenant Health at the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine in Alberta, outlines the major risk factors behind this increased incidence of disease. Dr. Cable also highlights what dentists can do to better screen their patients and advise on HPV vaccination.
