Infective Endocarditis: What Dental Practitioners Need to Know

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious medical condition that occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and infect the endocardium, the innermost lining of the heart.

In this CDA Oasis discussion, Dr. Aviv Ouanounou, associate professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, highlights the key risk factors for IE and shares the findings of his recent study Infective Endocarditis: Etiology, Epidemiology and Current Recommendations for the Dental Practitioner, which was published in the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association.

Dr. Ouanounou would like to thank his co-authors, Dr. Michael Martico and Dr. Harry Kapageridis, for their contribution to the study.
