Dentists spend a lot of time learning the skills of dentistry so they can provide the quality dental care patients need. However, when a patient’s behaviour cannot be managed effectively, it can become difficult or even impossible to carry out the required care. This scenario is particularly common in the pediatric setting.

In this video discussion, Dr. Nik Sharma, a certified specialist in pediatric dentistry from Toronto, explains the difference between behaviour management and behaviour guidance and walks us through some of his own best practices when treating a patient who requires behaviour management.

“Dentists spend a lot of time learning the skills of dentistry. But the art of dentistry I think is where you actually learn how to communicate with patients.”
