CDA Awards 2022-23: Award of Merit

Over the coming weeks, CDA Oasis is delighted to bring you the 2022-23 CDA Awards Recognition Program recipients. The CDA Awards recognize individuals across the country who have demonstrated unwavering passion and support for the dental profession in Canada and exhibited consistent commitment to the oral health of Canadians.

This year’s awards were presented on April 21 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Award of Merit

The Award of Merit recognizes individuals who have served in an outstanding capacity in the governing or service of CDA over a sustained period of time, or who have made similar outstanding contributions to the dental community, the dental profession, or the oral health of Canadians.

2022-23 Award of Merit Recipients

Dr. Tom Breneman

Dr. Tom Breneman has been actively involved in the dental profession for over 50 years. Shortly after graduating, he became President of the Western Manitoba Dental Society. He became President of the Manitoba Dental Association in 1991 and President of the Canadian Dental Association in 2002.

He is past Chair of the MDA Peer Review Committee and past section chair and trustee of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

But his community involvement does not stop there. He was National President of the Kinsman Club, Board member of the Brandon United Way and Western Manitoba Heart Association. He is a Past President of the Brandon University Foundation and has chaired two major fundraising campaigns.  He has received the Brandon Chamber of Commerce Business Builder of the Year Award, the MDA President’s Achievement Award, an Honorary Doctor of Science from Brandon University, and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Dentistry Alumni of Distinction Award.

Dr. Breneman’s achievements are a testament to him giving back to his profession and a shining example of what it means to be a community leader.

Dr. Michael Sullivan

Dr. Mike Sullivan is a Manitoba graduate, past president of the Manitoba Dental Association, past chair of the MDA’s Economics Committee and has served on their Infection Control Committee.

Nationally, he has been a member of CDA’s Advocacy Committee since 2014 and is now its chair. He is a member of the CDA USC&LS Committee and has served on CDA’s Access to Care Committee and was appointed by CDA to serve on Health Canada’s Non-insured Health Benefits Technical Working Group.  He has chaired the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation, is a fellow of the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.  He has served on the board of the Manitoba Dental Foundation and was actively involved in the MDA’s mentorship program and is the Chair of MDA’s Infection Control Committee.

Dr. Mary Ann Wiseman

Principled, hardworking, highly respected and devoted to our profession. These are words that colleagues use to describe Dr. Mary Ann Wiseman. She is a past president of the New Brunswick Dental Society and the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and most recently a member of the CDA Practice Recovery Task Force, its Lifelong Learning Task Force and Chair of the NBDS COVID Response Team.

When COVID struck, the NBDS relied heavily on CDA but also turned inward to its own membership for leadership. Dr. Wiseman was asked to chair the NBDS Committee on COVID 19 which she did without hesitation. Under her leadership and guidance, the committee developed a very robust and visionary operational plan.  She dedicated hundreds of hours working on this initiative. She is a shining example of giving back to our profession without hesitation during a time of need with hard work, unassuming leadership, and dedication.
