Opioid vs. Opioid-Free Analgesia after Surgical Discharge

Over prescribing opioids after surgery is considered a significant contributing factor to the opioid crisis in North America.

Dr. Julio Fiore Jr., research scientist at Montreal General Hospital and Assistant Professor at the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University, discusses his recent study, Opioid versus opioid-free analgesia after surgical discharge: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials, which was published in The Lancet in June 2022.

Dr. Fiore Jr. outlines his key findings and highlights the key takeaways for dentists performing minor or moderate surgeries.

Our results support that dentists can safely remove opioids from their prescriptions without any major repercussions for patients.”
