What is Gingival Thickness and Why is it Important?

Dr. Vinay Bhide
Periodontist, Aurora ON

In this edition of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. Vinay Bhide, Periodontist from Aurora On, takes a deep dive into gingival thickness and the role it plays in the long term stability of both natural teeth and implants.

In discussion with Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, Dr. Bhide outlines the periodontal phenotype as defined by both bone morphotype and gingival phenotype. Using his own case studies he illustrates the consequences of gingival recession and walks through best practice options for treatment. He also makes recommendations for managing gingival thickness in the general practice.

“Areas of thin gingiva are often difficult to maintain from an oral hygiene point of view. The literature tells us that areas where oral hygiene is not optimal are at high risk of gingival recession in 5-7 years.”
