CDA and Other Organizations Request the Government Impose Restrictions on Vaping Products

On September 30, 2019, Health Canada advised Canadians who use vaping products to monitor themselves for symptoms of pulmonary illness and to seek medical attention promptly if they have concerns about their health.

In the wake of the recent cases of severe pulmonary illnesses and a number of deaths reportedly linked to the use of vaping products in the United States, Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada provided national guidance to the provinces and territories on identifying cases of severe pulmonary illness related to vaping or e-cigarette use in Canada.

The Canadian Dental Association, along with 7 other organizations, addressed a letter to the Prime Minister, requesting that the mandate letter he issues to the Minister of Health include directions to immediately adopt measures to protect young people from the harms associated with vaping.

The request is driven by a growing concern about the significant short and long-term health risks, including addiction, increased risk for heart disease and lung illness that these products impose on non-smoking youth.

CDA and the group of organizations believe that an interim order that would bring vaping products under the same types of restrictions that are in place for tobacco products, restricting promotions, imposing comprehensive restrictions on flavours and certain additives, capping nicotine concentration, and requiring health warnings.

Who are the organizations who put forward the request?

  • Canadian Dental Association
  • Canadian Cancer Society
  • Canadian Lung Association
  • Canadian Medical Association
  • Heart & Stroke
  • Action on Smoking and Health
  • Coalition québécoise pour le contrôle du tabac
  • Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco

  1. Dr Paul Belzycki November 12, 2019

Dr. Paul Belzycki here, a frequent contributor to Oasis and Old Dentist. I feel that I have become the Andy Rooney of Oasis. For those of you too young to appreciate the Andy Rooney reference, and I’m sure there are many, let me tell you he was the Old Curmudgeon journalist featured on 60 Minutes who typically complained or shed light on the absurdity of modernity. Admittedly, I too chuckled at his rants when I was a younger man. Now that I am older, I find myself playing his same role.

This post reveals just another absurdity of modernity in Canada.

I will tell you beforehand that I will not read this post nor care about the issues at hand. What I find absurd is the fact that major health organizations and stakeholders are up in arms about vaping, while many of them voted wholeheartedly for the legalization of marijuana. The Liberals did run strongly on this issue. Apparently smoking marijuana is “naturally/holistically curative”, promotes “wellness”, and provides “individualistic empowerment”. Ah, all the buzzwords to sell nonsense…like Quantum Healing.

In the quaint old days, we smoked grass to get stoned while listening to the Stones at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Gardens allowed cigarette smoking then too. One could get wasted just breathing the smoke filled air. I offer this tidbit of info so you don’t think I am just an Old Foggie. Hey baby, I rocked!

And that my friends, is why the majority voted to legalize grass. It is basically to just to get high.

Drag for drag, I would say cigarettes, vaping and marijuana are all equally bad for the airway and lungs. They are all addictive by some psychological/physiological mechanism. It’s just plain old common sense which has become frightfully uncommon with modernity. There’s nothing new in this and I don’t need a multi-million-dollar study to prove it. Unfortunately, I am certain my tax dollars will fund a study eventually.

I have no dog in the fight. Must have been a slow news day at Oasis.

Hey, “don’t Bogart that joint my friend”.

You gotta be really old to get the above reference.

    Dr Dude.
