Myth Buster Series: All financial advisors are professionally qualified, right?

April is Oral Health Month. And this year, CDA OASIS is busting myths and tackling topics including pregnancy and dental health, what really erodes enamel, cyber security for dentists, social media, and more!

Today, the experts at CDSPI are here to clear up another common misconception, this time about financial advisors.

Misconception: All financial advisors are professionally qualified.

The facts:

When you go to a dentist, doctor, lawyer or any other professional, you assume they are certified to provide the treatment or service you require. You expect they’ve had extensive training, with a degree and a licence to attest to their competence.

Many people are under the impression that financial advisors need to be similarly qualified to practise their trade. Not true. Anyone can legally hang out a shingle and purport to be a financial advisor.

An advisor can earn a number of accreditations and designations to prove they have the expertise to provide advice that may be life changing.

The gold standard is the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) designation.

It is issued by the Financial Planning Standards Council to “meet appropriate standards of competence and professionalism through rigorous requirements of education, examination, experience and ethics.”

All financial advisors with CDSPI Advisory Services Inc.* have a CFP designation and a minimum of ten years of experience in the industry. Because they work exclusively with dentists, they understand the unique opportunities that practice ownership adds to a financial plan.

* Financial planning services are provided by licensed advisors at CDSPI Advisory Services Inc. Restrictions to advisory services may apply in certain jurisdictions.
