Practical How To: Kuraray’s PANAVIA SA Cement Plus

This post was prepared in collaboration with Kuraray

On an experimental basis, we have asked a limited number of companies to provide us with practical “How To” answers to clinical questions. We were prompted to conduct this experiment when dental team members told us that they visit company websites and consult company representatives for practical clinical information. We look forward to receiving your feedback on this experiment.

panavia-sa-cement-automix-handmix 2This next generation of the original PANAVIA SA Cement offers stronger shear bond strengths; faster light-curing time; and room temperature storage. Its EASY CLEANUP reduces the risk of gingival trauma, making it deal for indirect procedures..

PANAVIA SA Cement Plus has been developed for cementing indirect restorations made of metal, all-ceramic (zirconia), hybrid ceramics and composites. This self-adhesive resin cement does not require phosphoric acid treatment or any special primer or adhesive for bonding to tooth structure.  Obtaining a strong, durable bond to zirconia can be challenging.  PANAVIA SA Cement Plus, with its high concentration of the original MDP, bonds to zirconia chemically, as well as micromechanically.  Bond strengths are virtually unaffected by the dryness or wetness of the tooth structure.  It also contains a new Radical Amplifier, which increases the rate of polymerization, shortens the light-curing time, and increases the bond strength.

Features

  • Fluoride-releasing
  • Faster light-curing time (10 seconds)
  • Exceptional handling
  • Easy clean-up of excess cement
  • Original MDP technology
  • Bonds to Zirconia without a separate primer
  • Very low technique sensitivity - consistent bond strength to overly dry and wet dentin/enamel
  • High bond strength, including zirconia & alumina
  • Good marginal sealing
  • Low solubility and low film thickness, for optimal Cementation
  • Simple to use due to self-adhesive - no primers, silane or bonding agents needed
  • Room temperature storage with a stable 3-year shelf-life
  • NEW translucent shade available for optimum esthetics

Indications

  • Cementation of crowns, bridges, inlays and onlays made of conventional porcelain, ceramic, hybrid ceramics, composite resin
  • Metal cementation of metal cores, resin cores, metal posts or glass-fiber posts & Maryland Bridges
  • Can be used for amalgam bonding

PANAVIA SA Cement Plus is a self-adhesive; self-etch; fluoride-releasing dual-cure resin cement available in both automix and handmix versions.

Can Kuraray please provide the exact chemical binding at the atomic level by which MDP (10-Methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate) joints to Zirconium Dioxide.

The video emphatically states the product chemically binds to Zirconia. Which atom(s) does it form a bond with? The zirconium or the oxygen? And by what method…Covalent bond, Ionic, Metalic, Van der Vaals?

Does the interior surface require any treatment, such as blastiing with a compound (Rocatec 3M) that imparts silicium oxide particles on the surface for silanization agents? Or does one use Aluminum Oxide as described in an article on their website?

In addition, can the “increased” mechanical bonding be explained with more specificity?

Finally, what is the general classification of this cement. Resin? Resin Modified?….etc?

      Good morning Dr. Belzycki,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment. Kuraray provided the following answers to your questions:

Q: How does Kuraray’s Original MDP adhesive monomer bond to zirconia?
A: Zirconia is a metal oxide ceramic (zirconia is actually in the metal group on the periodic table). When zirconia is air abraded (micro-etched/sandblasted), it exposes zr atoms which chemically bond to the oxygen atoms in the MDP monomer. Please see attached PDF for images.

There is over 20-25 years of bond data on Panavia resin cements provide stable-durable bonds to zirconia.
Kuraray also has a single-bottle,dual-monomer primer for all ceramics, zirconia & base metals (it contains silane and MDP and no water, very stable chemistry). This was released in 2007 and is what the other zirconia primers are based on today.

Q: How does the interior surface of Zirconia have to be treated to get chemical bonding?
A: Air abraded with 50 micron alumina oxide powder at 1-2 bars (15-58 PSI).

Q: Can you give more details on the micro-mechanical bonding to zirconia?
A: There is not much micro-mechanical bonding to zirconia because it does not have etch patterns after air abrasion treatment. There can be some micro-mechanical bonding occurring, however, this will be little due again to little evidence of etch patterns in the zirconia.

Q: What classification is Panavia SA Cement Plus?
A: Panavia SA Cement Plus is self-adhering resin cement. It is not a resin modified glass ionomer (RMGI).
