Persistent Toothache Despite Multiple Dental-related Treatments

Patients with recurrent or persistent dentoalveolar pain usually believe endodontic treatment or extracting a tooth will alleviate it. Most patients do not consider that the pain might not be tooth-related.

In this CDA Oasis discussion, Dr. Dean Kolbinson, a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Oral Medicine and a Professor at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Dentistry, discusses his recent publication in the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association, which presents an overview of the basic concepts that help to manage such cases. He outlines the possible causes of nonodontogenic pain as well as diagnostic pitfalls that may lead to questionable treatments.

“Our goal was to show how important it is to listen to patients while taking a comprehensive pain history and performing a thorough clinical work-up to avoid common pitfalls that can lead to unnecessary treatments.”

Dr. Kolbinson wishes to acknowledge the significant contribution of co-author Dr. Jean-Paul Goulet in the publication of this review.
