The Role of the General Dentist in Caring for Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate

Dr. Camila Caro
Orthodontist, Toronto ON

The overall dental care for a patient with cleft lip and palate is extensive, typically comprising a plan that spans 12-15 years and includes treatment including mixed dentition, expansion, bone graft, orthodontics, possible jaw surgery, implants, and final restoration.

Dr. Camila Caro is an orthodontist from Toronto who herself was born with a cleft lip and palate, and who now specializes in the care of patients with facial differences. In conversation with Chiraz Guessaier, Manager CDA Oasis, Dr. Caro walks through the key elements of oral healthcare for patients with cleft lip and palate. Focusing on the perspective of the General Dentist, she highlights the importance of dental hygiene, routine care in the community, and the importance of teamwork and communication. She also stresses that very little additional training is required by General Dentists in order for them to provide care for patients with facial differences.

“Not every dentist was willing to treat me as a patient because they were afraid that they needed additional training. The reality is they don’t.”

Many dentists are trained and providing extensive treatments> Some of these discussing doesn’t reflect it. We are treating impacted canines, and consultation only in very difficult cases. We provide ortho treatment with impacted canine. Patients are reluctant to see specialist dentists and they prefer most of the work done in the dentist’s office
