Screening for Obstructive Sleep Apnea in the Dental Practice

Dr. John Viviano
General Practitioner, Mississauga ON
Expert in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

In the second of a series of Oasis Live discussions on Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Dr. John Viviano talks to Dr. John O’Keefe about screening protocols for OSA in the Dental Office.

Dr. Viviano explains that screening is a simple process that can be delegated to any staff member in the dental office and should be carried both on initial assessment of a patient presenting at the practice and as part of an annual medical follow up.

He introduces three literature-validated questionnaires that are commonly used for the screening of sleep apnea and walks through the dentist’s role in the diagnostic pathway of OSA.

“It’s not normal for a person to be tired during the daytime. If they are, something is wrong. Either they are not sleeping long enough or there is a problem with their sleep.”
