Finding the MB2 Canal in an Upper First Molar

Locating the MB2 canal in an upper first molar has been a subject of interest and controversy for a long time. As recently as the 1980s, many dental schools taught that only around 50% of upper molars had an MB2 canal. This thinking has since changed.

In this episode of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, invites Dr. Howie Fogel, an endodontist from Winnipeg, to share his considerable experience and insight into the matter.

Citing clinical studies published in the Journal of Endodontics, including his own study Canal Configuration in the Mesiobuccal Root of the Maxillary First Molar: A Clinical Study, Dr. Fogel explains that by using appropriate magnification and enhanced lighting, it has been shown that pretty much all upper first molars have two MB canals.

Dr. Fogel also walks through a video presentation illustrating how to locate the MB2 canal, and shares valuable tips on best practice for General Dentists.

Just fabulous, humble and true to life. As a GP who, by keeping numbers, am at about 80-82% MB’ filled, clearly a long way to go. The video teaching points were awesome, thanks, next we need efficient hand/rotary prep of MB’, the sooner the better!
